What Is a Golf Handicap Index?

A handicap index is a portable number that represents a golfer’s demonstrated ability. It is not an average of all your scores, but rather a reflection of your potential on a course of standard difficulty (Slope Rating 113). The index is used worldwide, allowing players from different clubs and countries to compete on a level playing field.

The USGA and R&A jointly maintain the World Handicap System, which unified six older systems in 2020 and was further updated in 2024.

How the World Handicap System Works

Under WHS, your handicap index is based on your best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. No longer is a mysterious multiplier applied – since the 2024 revision, the formula is straightforward:

• Record your adjusted gross score for each round.
• Compute the score differential for that round (formula below).
• Sort the last 20 differentials, take the lowest 8.
• Average those 8 differentials – that’s your official handicap index.

You only need three 18‑hole rounds (or six 9‑hole rounds) to get your first index.

How to Calculate a Score Differential

The score differential is the key input. It measures how you played relative to the course’s difficulty.

Formula:

Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score – Course Rating)

• Adjusted Gross Score – your total strokes after any handicap adjustments (e.g., net double bogey maximum per hole).
• Course Rating – the expected score for a scratch golfer under normal conditions.
• Slope Rating – a measure of the course’s difficulty for a bogey golfer (113 is standard).

Example: You shoot an adjusted 92 on a course rated 70.1 with a slope of 125. Your differential = (113 ÷ 125) × (92 – 70.1) = 0.904 × 21.9 = 19.8.

This is the number that goes into your scoring record.

The calculator above works out both single‑round differentials and your full handicap index. Enter your adjusted gross score, course rating, and slope rating for one round to see the differential. If you have a full set of 20 rounds, the tool selects the lowest 8 differentials, averages them, and gives your current WHS handicap index.

How to Calculate Your Handicap Index – Step by Step

1. Post all acceptable rounds – every 18‑hole round on a rated course, regardless of score. Include nine‑hole rounds; they are combined into 18‑hole equivalents.
2. Compute the score differential for each round using the formula above.
3. Once you have 20 differentials, select the lowest 8 values.
4. Add the lowest 8 together and divide by 8.
5. No further multiplication – this average is your handicap index (rounded to one decimal place).

If you have fewer than 20 rounds, the WHS uses a smaller number of differentials based on a fixed table:

• 3 rounds: lowest 1
• 4 rounds: lowest 1
• 5 rounds: lowest 1
• 6 rounds: lowest 2
• 7–8 rounds: lowest 2
• 9–11 rounds: lowest 3
• 12–14 rounds: lowest 4
• 15–16 rounds: lowest 5
• 17–18 rounds: lowest 6
• 19 rounds: lowest 7
• 20 rounds: lowest 8

What Changed in the WHS in 2024?

In 2024 the 0.96 multiplier was permanently removed. Previously, the handicap index was multiplied by 0.96 to create a “bonus for excellence” cushion. That practice is now gone, making the calculation simpler and more transparent. The 2024 update also introduced a more refined playing conditions calculation (PCC) that automatically adjusts differentials for abnormal weather or course setup.
