How does an online height converter work?
The math relies on two fixed definitions. One international inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters, which means 1 inch equals 2.54 cm and 1 foot equals 30.48 cm. These constants never change, so results are reproducible anywhere.
To convert centimeters to feet and inches manually:
- Divide the centimeter value by 30.48 to obtain the total number of feet in decimal form.
- The integer portion is the foot value.
- Multiply the remaining decimal by 12 to extract the inches.
- Round the inch remainder to one decimal place for everyday use.
For example, converting 183 cm:
183 / 30.48 = 6.0039 feet. The integer is 6 feet. 0.0039 × 12 = 0.047 inches. So 183 cm is essentially 6 ft 0 in, often written as exactly 6 feet.
Another example with 165 cm:
165 / 30.48 = 5.413 feet. 0.413 × 12 = 4.96 inches. Result: 5 ft 5.0 in.
To convert feet and inches back to centimeters:
- Multiply the foot value by 30.48.
- Multiply the inch value by 2.54.
- Add the two products together.
