SGPA Calculator
Your SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures how well you performed in a single semester, giving more weight to courses with higher credit loads. Whether you’re planning your next semester’s strategy or preparing your transcript for internships, knowing your exact SGPA removes guesswork. Use the free SGPA calculator below to get your result instantly.
What is SGPA?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It reflects the average of grade points obtained in all subjects of one semester, weighted by the credit value of each subject. Most Indian universities calculate SGPA on a 10‑point scale, where a grade of A+ may equal 10 points, A equals 9, B+ equals 8, and so on, but the scale can vary.
Because semesters differ in course load, SGPA condenses your performance into a single number between 0 and the maximum scale (usually 10). This makes it easy to compare academic results across different terms.
How to Calculate SGPA (Step by Step)
Calculating SGPA manually is straightforward. Follow these steps:
- List all subjects – note the credit points (or credit hours) and the grade point secured in each subject.
- Multiply credit × grade point – for every subject, multiply the credit points by the grade point. This gives the quality points for that subject.
- Sum the quality points – add up all the quality points.
- Sum the total credits – add up all the credit points of every subject in the semester.
- Divide – divide the total quality points by the total credits. The result is your SGPA.
In mathematical notation:
\[ SGPA = \frac{\sum (Credit_i \times Grade_Point_i)}{\sum Credit_i} \]Example: if a subject has 4 credits and you earned a grade point of 9, the quality points are 36. Do this for each subject, sum them, then divide by total credits.
Example: SGPA Calculation for 5 Subjects
Let’s assume a typical semester with five subjects. Here’s how the numbers look:
| Subject | Credits | Grade Point | Quality Points (Credit × Grade Point) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Math | 4 | 8 | 32 |
| Physics | 3 | 9 | 27 |
| Chemistry | 3 | 7 | 21 |
| English | 2 | 10 | 20 |
| Computer Science | 4 | 9 | 36 |
| Total | 16 | 136 |
SGPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credits
SGPA = 136 / 16 = 8.5
An SGPA of 8.5 on a 10‑point scale indicates strong academic performance for that semester.
SGPA vs CGPA – What’s the Difference?
Although both terms appear on mark sheets, they serve different purposes:
- SGPA is semester‑specific. It tells you how well you did in one particular semester.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average across all semesters completed up to a given point. It is calculated by taking the sum of all quality points from every semester divided by the total credits across all those semesters.
A high SGPA can pull your CGPA upward, while a low SGPA can drag it down. Most institutions use the CGPA for final degree classification, but many employers and postgraduate admissions also inspect individual semester SGPAs.
How to Convert SGPA to Percentage
Many students need a percentage equivalent for applications or eligibility checks. The most common method, widely used by Indian universities (including many under AICTE and UGC guidelines), is:
\[ Percentage = SGPA \times 10 \]For example, an SGPA of 8.5 would convert to 85%.
Some institutions apply a slightly different formula, such as (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 or a predefined conversion table. Always check your university’s official conversion rule before relying on a percentage.
The SGPA calculator above focuses solely on computing the semester average; if you need a percentage, apply the multiplication manually after you obtain your SGPA.
